Future Program: Permanent Supportive Housing

Designed by MRV Architects

We are raising funds to construct a 51-unit apartment building that offers permanent supportive housing to the most vulnerable from Juneau and the surrounding region of Southeast Alaska. This three-story, 19,584 square-foot project will house adults who are in recovery from substance use disorders, are in reentry from incarceration, and have barriers to housing stability. All units will be dedicated to expanding the availability of long-term supportive housing to support recovery, reduce homelessness, prevent the cycling of tenants through homeless shelters or correctional facilities, and provide new housing opportunities for people in recovery from substance use disorders who may also be experiencing homelessness, including Juneau’s reentry population.

Each unit will be equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, living space and storage space, and all 51 units are designed to meet ADA requirements. Six (12 percent) of the units will also include more enhanced ADA accessibility features to support residents who use wheelchairs or have other mobility challenges. At least one will be equipped for people who experience sensory issues (e.g., blind, hard of hearing/deaf). The facility will offer access to onsite amenities and services including communal laundry, 24-hour security and secure building access, and common seating spaces on each floor. The building will be constructed on an existing 5-acre campus with ample outdoor space (wooded areas and community green spaces), as well as a barbecue area, basketball court, and outdoor exercise area with fitness equipment. The GHS campus, the site of this project, is also home to a community residential rehabilitation center, a residential counseling and recovery facility, and a transitional housing program facility. The campus has 24-hour onsite staff and includes onsite spaces to support resident behavioral health and recovery and re-entry, including space dedicated to supportive services, confidential one-on-one appointments with providers, and case management, with a focus on substance use disorders and related challenges such as mental health diagnoses and other issues. Finally, rent will include utilities and broadband.

Construction will begin as soon as we have raised the $12M cost for the project. We have made significant progress toward this goal but need your help to get the rest of the way there!
